Chest Pain/Coronary Artery Disease
“Angina” or Chest Pain from Heart Blockage
Inflammation targeting the lining of the walls of the coronary arteries on top of and within the heart leads to plaque build up, blocking flow in the coronary artery. Contributors to this build up, or coronary artery disease, include genetics, smoking, diabetes, injured cholesterol, and elevated blood pressure. Once more than 70% of the artery is blocked, chest pain or “angina” (often with exertion) can develop. Other symptoms include shortness of breath and fatigue. If the coronary artery disease is considered severe/extensive or “high-risk", surgical by-passing of the artery may be considered. In such cases, Protected PCI can be performed without surgery using a heart pump for protection, the Impella.
